  • Community Legal Advice
    Get free, confidential legal advice on a range of issues varying from family and personal, debt money and tax, employment, housing, education and training, benefits and tax credits and police and crime.
  • NHS Choices Stressline
    The aim of the service is to provide people who are worried about debt, housing and employment with practical and emotional support from a team of trained health advisors. If they are suffering from stress, anxiety or depression, they will be directed to other sources of financial and mental health support.

Domestic violence

  • Broken Rainbow LGBT Domestic Violence
    Offering advice, support and referral services to LGBT people experiencing homophobic, transphobic and same sex domestic violence.
  • Refuge
    Full details of groups with their phone numbers who offer support and advice.
  • Everyman Project
    A seven month therapeutic counselling programme designed to support and challenge men ceasing their violent and/or abusive behaviours.
  • Rise
    A charity which supports women, children and young people affected by domestic abuse in Brighton & Hove and across West Sussex. Services can include: refuge accommodation, resettlement, crisis appointments, helpline, counselling, housing, legal and financial advice, solicitors appointments, support groups, play therapy, 1-to-1 support and training and preventative education. Rise was formerly the Women's Refuge Project.
  • Citizens Advice Bureau
    Explains what domestic violence is and offers contact details and links to national websites and support groups.

Families and relationships

  • Community Legal Advice
    Dealing with a divorce? Wondering about custody and child maintenance? Dealing with abuse at home?
  • Family Mediation
    Dealing with relationship breakdown without going to court. Confidential counselling regarding oneself and ones children.
  • Relate - The relationship people
    Relate offers a wide range of services for couples, families or individuals at all stages of their relaionships.
  • Hove YMCA Linx Family Support Group
    The LINX project is an independent, confidential service offering respectful, friendly and flexible support to families.

Homeless

  • First Base Day Centre
    First Base is a centre for homeless and vulnerable men and women in Brighton and Hove. If you are homeless or you are worried for yourself to become or you know someone else who is at risk, the First Base can give support and advice.
    Short term activities and support are provided to individuals with assessed needs.
  • The Clock Tower Sanctuary
    The Clock Tower Sanctuary is the only voluntary day centre for young homeless people between the ages of 16 and 25 in Brighton and Hove.
    A friendly safe space, food and drink, access to computers and the internet, signposting to housing, health, education, employment and social services are provided, as well as practical and emotional support.

Mental health

  • Anxiety Alliance
    Anxiety Alliance is run by former anxiety sufferers, so they fully understand the physical feelings and negative thoughts that sufferers have.  Our confidential and impartial helpline is available from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, with a panic advice line from 10pm until 10am every night.
  • Equinox Brighton & Hove Treatment Services
    A London based charity that has a centre also in Brighton. It works with people with complex needs, in the areas of mental health, substance misuse and homelessness. Its care and support service consists of three elements:

    ● Supported housing for male drinkers

    ● Probation Counselling for offenders on Alcohol Treatment Requirement

    ● Alcohol Outreach Service for street drinkers

  • Mind
    Mind helps people take control of their mental health by providing high-quality information and advice, and campaigning to promote and protect good mental health for everyone.
  • Rethink
    Rethink, the leading national mental health membership charity, works to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life.
  • SANEline
    SANEline aims to raise awareness and respect for people with mental illness and their families and secure better services. It also provides help and information to those experiencing mental health problems, their families and carers through SANEline and SANEmail.

Older people

  • Action on Elder Abuse
    Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) works to protect and prevent the abuse of vulnerable older adults.

Sexual abuse

  • Mankind Counselling
    Delivering specialist support services to men (18+) who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and/or adult sexual assault at any time in their lives.
  • Mind
    Resources for anyone who has experienced sexual abuse in a variety of situations.
  • Rape Crisis
    Rape Crisis Centres provide a range of specialist services for women and girls that have been raped or experienced another form of sexual violence - whether as adults or as children.

Those in distress

  • Samaritans
    Samaritans provides confidential non-judgemental emotional support, 24 hours a day for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which could lead to suicide.

    CRI is a national provider of support, treatment and rehabilitation programmes for those whose lives are blighted by substance misuse, crime and lack of opportunity.
  • Victim Support
    Free and confidential support to help you deal with what you've been through as a victim or witness, whether or not you report the crime to the police.

Women

  • Care Co-ops – Women’s Drop-In Service
    The Care Co-ops Women’s Drop-In is a safe place to meet other women and to find out about other support and services in the city. Women of all ages who are experiencing a bad period in their lives, feel under stress or isolated or may have used mental health services are welcome.
    The drop-in is free, confidential, runs for 2 hours and takes place every week. There is no waiting list or expectation to attend every week.
  • Mind Brighton and Hove

  • Survivors' Network
    Provide support, listening, information, connections and space for women to use.
  • The Martlets Hospice
    Provides counselling and bereavement support to the families and friends of people in its care, and practical support to help people sort out their financial and family affairs.
  • Threshold women’s counselling & crèche service
    Threshold is a women-only counselling service providing therapy & groups as a way of supporting women & promoting well being. A free crèche runs alongside our counselling service.
